Science

Wherever possible Science is presented to the pupils in a practical context. We believe in children having the opportunity to do the real thing first and then using the many available computer simulations and DVDs to support and reinforce what they have found out. Right from the start of KS2 pupils become involved in investigational work, gradually opening up the process of a fair test and scientific enquiry and developing the necessary skills for an area that has become such an important part of the Science curriculum.

Much of our learning takes place in the classroom but not all. We make use of the school grounds and have our own bug hotel!  The KS1 & KS2 curriculum is supported by visits to places such as Woods Mill Environmental Centre, the beach, Herstmonceux Science Centre, the Mohair Centre and Knockhatch Adventure Park; by visiting speakers such as a local dentist, the School Nurse and the Police; and by visits to the school by such as Zoolab, Skylab and the Quantum Theatre for Science.  During the last 2 years, Year 2 have also hatched chicks , ducks and butterflies in their classroom.

The Science SATS results are consistently above the national average and in the last official Science SATS, in 2009, over 80% of our children achieved a level 5.

Good links are maintained with the Senior School to facilitate a smooth transition into year 7.  One of the Senior School Science teachers comes to the Prep School each week to run a Science Club for KS2 and Year 6 have several twilight visits a year to the Senior School for sessions in their laboratories.

In Key Stage 2 at Battle Abbey Prep School pupils have 5 lessons of Science a week. Pupils use IT in some areas of the curriculum - for research, to support and consolidate their work, for the collection of data and for recording. We follow the National Curriculum and base what we do on the QCA Scheme of Work.
