GCSE Music
Examination: Edexcel GCSE (2MU01)
Unit 1: Performing Music (30%)
Students produce a solo and an ensemble performance which is recorded at any time during the course. The performances may be on any instrument and in any style. The choice of repertoire is down to the student and teacher and should be of Grade IV standard. The recordings are internally assessed and moderated by Edexcel.
Unit 2: Composing Music (30%)
Students will produce either 2 compositions, 2 arrangements or 1 arrangement and 1 composition. The combined length of the 2 pieces submitted should be between two and four minutes. Each composition or arrangement must be linked to pieces from the Areas of Study, (see next unit.)
Unit 3: Music – Listening and Appraising (40%)
In this unit students will study music from 4 Areas of Study:
i) Western Classical Music 1600-1899.
ii) Music in the 20th century.
iii) Popular Music in Context.
iv) World Music.
There are 3 set works from each area of study including Mozart: Symphony No 40 (first movement), Bernstein: ‘Something’s Coming’ from West Side Story and Miles Davis: ‘All Blues’. Assessment is by written and aural examination on the 12 works. In section A students respond to questions based on recorded extracts of the set works. In section B, students answer a more in depth question on a chosen set work. The assessment includes QWC. The exam lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
