Drama & Theatre Studies
We offer a choice of two A levels in Drama and Performing Arts:
AQA Drama and Theatre Studies
This course provides an excellent balance between practical and academic study.  It is particularly suited to students who enjoy studying plays from different periods and who are confident with exam technique.  Assessment is through examination, practical performance and supporting notes.  Students study through practical work, plays in performance, practice writing exam essays and prepare their own group performance at both AS and A2 level.
AS
Unit 1:  Live Theatre Production Seen and Prescribed Play
Written Paper   1hour 30 minutes
60% of AS marks, 30% of total A Level marks
Section A – One essay in response to live theatre seen as part of the course
Section B – One essay on a set play

Unit 2:  Presentation of an Extract from a Play
Practical
40% of AS marks, 20% of total A Level marks
Group performance of an extract from a published play
Assessment includes preparatory and development work and supporting notes
Candidates choose from:
• directing
• acting
• costume design
• mask design
• set design
• technical elements – lighting and /or sound
This unit includes the study of an influential director, designer, Theatre Company or other practitioner liked to the candidate’s work.

A2
Unit 3:  Further Prescribed Plays including Pre-Twentieth Century
Written  Paper  2hours  30% of total A Level marks
Section A – One essay on a pre-20th century play
Section B – One essay on a contemporary play which requires suggestions for a complete realisation of a short extract from the selected text

Unit 4:  Presentation of Devised Drama
Practical  20% of total A Level marks
Group performance of devised drama
Assessment includes preparatory and development work and supporting notes
Candidates choose from:
• directing
• acting
• costume design
• mask design
• set design
• technical elements – lighting and /or sound
